Ministries of Westminster

Come and explore some of the varied ministries of Westminster

  • Deacons

One of the ordained positions in the church, the Board of Deacons consists of 23 members who are elected by the congregation to serve a three-year term.  The ministry of the Deacons is one of care and concern.  It is a ministry of sympathy, witness, and service following the example set down by Jesus Christ.  We minister to the sick, to those who are in need, to the friendless, and to any who are in distress both within and beyond the community of faith.

Each Deacon at Westminster is assigned a shut-in to visit, providing support as needed and serving as a bridge between these individuals and the congregation.  Deacons visit the hospitals and serve as greeters on Sunday mornings.  They deliver flowers to homebound members and nursing homes and maintain contact with families who have had children baptized at the church.  The Prayer Shawl Ministry is an active part of the Deacons ministry, providing shawls to members and friends of the church in need of special support, encouragement or care.

  • Loaves and fishes food pantry

In a world where many are in need, we faithfully respond to God’s call to care for the hungry through our Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry.  Located at 1251 3rd Avenue SE, just a few doors down from the church, the pantry provides a needed resource for our community.

Open on Tuesday afternoons from 3:00-5:00 p.m., over 100 family units come to the pantry to receive groceries that will put food on their tables for the next week.  But they also find more than that – a cup of hot coffee or a cool drink (depending on the Iowa weather), a listening ear, and, sometimes, a shoulder to cry on.  Through the pantry, we take seriously the call of Jesus to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and care for the least and the lost.

If you’d like to help out at the pantry, call the Church Office at (319) 366-7185  for more information.

  • prayer shawl ministry

Besides getting food from Loaves and Fishes pantry, sometimes people arrive to see colorful hand-knit scarves on the front rail which they can take to stay warm in the cold, winter months. It's all part of the Prayer Shawl Ministry at Westminster

For more than 10 years, this group of volunteers has met twice a month for fellowship and knitting. They will even teach you to knit! Interested? Contact the church office for information.

  • kids closet

Westminster's Kids' Closet collects and provides clean, gently-used clothes for needy families with children. Sizes range from baby to size 14/16.

Donations of clean, gently-used or new clothing are gratefully accepted and may be brought to the Church and placed in the bin at the bottom of the Foyer stairs.  Volunteers are always needed for this important mission!  If you are interested in helping, please contact the Church Office.

  • health ministry

To work for the total health and wholeness of the entire congregation is the purpose of the Health Ministries Committee.  To this end, we provide monthly blood pressure checks for those attending worship, sponsor two blood drives each year, make sure first aid kits are available in various places around the church, monitor the Automated External Defibrillator and ensure that staff and volunteers are trained in its use as well as CPR, and sponsor numerous adult education forums and classes.
